Author Bio

Hello! I’m Lorna McCann and I’m an author of children’s stories. I write imaginative, and engaging books for children aged three to seven to enjoy anywhere and at any time.

My stories and characters are brought to life with fun, beautifully drawn and brightly coloured illustrations and I hope my books will encourage children all over the world to enjoy reading, writing and being creative.

When I was young…

I grew up in rural Shropshire with my mum, dad, older brother and our two pets – a tabby cat called Tabsy and a rabbit called Binky.

I’ve always enjoyed making up stories and remember from a young age spending time scribbling ideas down in notebooks. I also loved to draw although I was never particularly good at this bit!

When I wasn’t busy writing and drawing, I could often be found outside climbing trees, splashing in muddy puddles, playing football or building things out of anything I could find in my dad’s garage.

When I got older…

After leaving school my love of the outdoors inspired me to go to university to study for a degree in Geography. A few years after graduating I then returned to my love of writing and trained to become a journalist.

My first proper job was working as a reporter for a local newspaper. I went on to write for various newspaper titles across the UK before moving into the PR industry, writing news and content for a range of media and specialist publications.

I was inspired to write my first children’s story book by my two sons. They loved picture books from an early age and also really enjoyed it when I made silly stories up for them. They also loved biscuits and that was the inspiration behind my first book ‘Wendy and the Biscuit Tree’ which was published in 2016. It became an Amazon best-selling book overnight and in 2018 it won Best Children’s Product at the Businesses for Children’s Awards in Shropshire.

My second book ‘Felix – the small boy with the BIG imagination’ was published in 2017 and, my third and most recent book, ‘I Wish I Could Fly’ was released in 2021.

As an author, my aim is to inspire a love of reading, writing and creativity among young children. My work involves visiting schools to deliver storytelling sessions and creative workshops and I’m passionate that all children and schools have opportunities to experience an author visit, which is why in 2018 I founded the Rural Schools Write Read Inspire Project.

In conjunction with private funding partners, the project aims to enhance literacy skills and creativity in small, rural schools by providing subsidised author visits.

Present day…

I’m currently working on more exciting stories for children as well as continuing to juggle working part-time as a PR account manager.

I’m also continuing to work with partners to develop the great work of the Rural Schools Write, Read, Inspire Project.
